The process: digital technology made simple The "digital paper" part of the solution involves the on-demand printing—on plain office paper— of a business form template that also contains small pre-defined dot patterns. As a user writes with a digital pen over these patterns, the handwritten information is captured (or "lifted") from the paper via a tiny embedded digital camera.

• Handwritten elements can include signatures, notes, filled-in data fields and check boxes
• Handwritten data is "read" electronically, encrypted and stored within the digital pen’s memory, and transferred to a host PC; electronic files created by the pen can be distributed to any number of back-end, serverbased information systems
• For real-time processing, a Bluetooth®-enabled pen sends data securely to a mobile phone or PDA which, in turn, transmits files to an electronic workflow system, saving substantial data entry and manual processing time for typical handwritten forms
• Forms can be saved in various file formats including PDF or TIFF format, or the handwriting can be converted into electronic data, corrected for accuracy or missing information, and then integrated into a database

The Printers	The Paper	The Pattern	The Pen
The C6100 Series, C8800 series, C9600 Series and B4600 Series LED technology-based printers from OKI Printing Solutions have all been qualified by Anoto®, our digital pen technology provider, to print the extremely precise dot patterns.	Plain office paper can be used with qualified color and monochrome printers from OKI Printing Solutions to print forms. To make the paper digitally legible, a patent-protected dot pattern is added to the background of the printout.	Almost invisible to the naked eye, these patterns consist of small dots that can be read by a digital pen. Individual patterns indicate the exact position of the digital pen on the form’s template. The patterns’ identities are so unique that each page of a "multipart" form is kept separate from the other pages, allowing users to write on any page at any time.	A digital pen looks and feels like a normal ballpoint—but it contains an integrated digital camera, an advanced image microprocessor, enough memory to hold up to 40 full pages of text, and either a USB-compatible or, for wireless connectivity, a Bluetooth communications device (shown).
